Crime Directives
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
In Pickpocket, a young man believes himself above and beyond ordinary men and so justifies his actions as a pickpocket. Bresson of course shows us the details and rituals behind pickpocketing, while the hero wrestles with a Dostoyevskian conflict; does he really want to be caught? The final moment, during which the hero discovers the love of the devoted girl while behind bars, inspired Paul Schrader to pay homage with his American Gigolo. The Criterion Collection's 2005 DVD includes an audio commentary by film scholar James Quandt, a new video introduction by writer-director Paul Schrader and various interviews and featurettes.
