They Drive by Night (1940)
Road to Frisco
By Jeffrey M. Anderson When Humphrey Bogart teamed up with the great director Raoul Walsh for They Drive by Night (1940), he wasn't yet an A-list player. And in fact, George Raft, Ida Lupino and Ann Sheridan were billed above him; Lupino became a star overnight with her performance as a half-mad businesswoman. The film has Raft and Bogart as truck-driving brothers who long to get ahead in this difficult and dangerous business. After an accident, Raft gets promoted to a desk job, but Lupino tries to sink her hooks into him -- even though he's already fallen for a former truck stop waitress (Sheridan). Walsh keeps the film close to the ground and makes the transition between the two very different stories with complete confidence. This DVD also comes with the short Swingtime in the Movies (1938).
