Tom and Jerry's Greatest Chases Vol. 1 (2000)
Cat and Mouse
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Buy Tom and Jerry's Greatest Chases Vol. 1 on DVD
Animation nuts poo-pooed Warner Home Video's official collector's release of Tom and Jerry cartoons on the grounds that they were not uncensored. But this very cheap, 14-cartoon set was designed for kids, and though the cartoons are still edited, there's much less at stake here. Among the 14 cartoons, we have four Oscar-winners, including the masterpiece The Cat Concerto (1947), widely considered the best of all the Tom & Jerry shorts. The others are the war-themed The Yankee Doodle Mouse (1943), the Thanksgiving-set The Little Orphan (1948) and Johann Mouse (1952). Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Mouse (1947) was an Oscar-nominee. A bonus feature has the sequence from the feature film Anchors Aweigh (1945) in which Jerry dances with Gene Kelly. Warner Home Video released Tom and Jerry's Greatest Chases Vol. 2 in 2009.
