Bringing Back Baby
By Jeffrey M. Anderson After interviewing and getting to know director Howard Hawks, Peter Bogdanovich directed this homage to Hawks' screwball classic Bringing Up Baby (1938). It's dippy and rather lethargic compared to Hawks' snappy, speedy film, but it's still enjoyable thanks to the fine use of San Francisco locations and an agreeably nutty Barbra Streisand. (It works on a cartoonish level.) Howard Bannister (Ryan O'Neal) arrives in San Francisco to compete for a research grant in music, but he is waylaid by the apparently love-struck Judy Maxwell (Streisand). Madeline Kahn holds her own as Howard's sour fiancée. The screenplay boasts three high-class writers, Buck Henry, Robert Benton and David Newman, who worked from Bogdanovich's story.
