Comrades, Almost a Love Story (1996)
Maggie Maze
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Starring the luminous Maggie Cheung and spanning ten years, Peter Chan's Comrades, Almost a Love Story depicts Maggie's on-again, off-again romance with Leon Lai (a pop star in real life). Both have fled to Hong Kong from China hoping to avoid Communist rule, and both feel like strangers in a strange land. Like a more weighty When Harry Met Sally... you writhe in painful pleasure as these two destined lovebirds keep missing each other over several years. It's a wonderful and bittersweet but highly romantic film. The San Francisco-based Tai Seng Video has released this unsung classic on DVD.
