Flipper Live: Target Video - 1980-1981 (2008)

3 Stars (out of 4)

Non-Generic Flipper

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Flipper was one of the great San Francisco punk bands, and perhaps one of the greatest San Francisco bands, period. They played a kind of noisy, aggressive rock, but instead of fast, short songs, they weren't afraid to venture into bizarre, messy, sonic jams full of blurting saxophones and annoyingly repetitious lyrics. Their trick was that, the more they tried to alienate listeners, the more passionate their fans grew. This amazing video captures two live shows. The first, performed in 1980 in Berkeley Square, is the better of the two, with stronger picture and sound quality. It features nine songs, including an endless, endless version of "The Wheel." Imagine chanting the phrase "I am the wheel" so many times that you want to run screaming. The second show takes place in San Francisco's Kezar Stadium in 1981. Neither show contains Flipper's signature song, "Sex Bomb," although there is a television performance of that song included. Singer/guitarist Will Shatter died in 1987, and former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic has joined the band for recent gigs.
