On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970)
Flower Girl
By Jeffrey M. Anderson I don't know of any other director besides Vincente Minnelliwho was capable of such glorious highs and such wretched lows. Hissecond-to-last film On a Clear Day You Can See Forever is one of the latter. Barbra Streisand stars asDaisy, a joyous, loopy pinwheel of a girl who visits Dr. Mac Chabot (YvesMontand) in the hopes of being hypnotized out of her smoking habit. Instead,Chabot finds evidence of a past life and eventually finds himself falling inlove with the girl's other personality, "Melinda." Minnelli flashesback to 19th century England to flesh out "Melinda's" story, butthese spongy, heavily edited sequences lack fizzle. The rest of the overlongfilm has a stagebound, leaden quality, except for a few delirious scenes onDaisy's rooftop garden (she has a knack for growing plants quickly). JackNicholson turns up as Daisy's hippie-ish ex-brother-in-law, and provides a kindof male anchor that the brittle, sexless Montand cannot. Nelson Riddle and AlanJay Lerner's turgid songs pound the final nail in the coffin. DVD Details: Paramount has released this film on a new DVD without any real extras.
