Hellcats on Wheels
By Jeffrey M. Anderson In the mid-90s, a group of exploitation filmmakers wereassigned a list of titles from the old American Independent Pictures, and askedto direct a series of new made-for-cable films. The filmmakers did notnecessarily have to follow the old plots, and so many of the films are notstraight remakes. Director Joe Dante took on the juvenile delinquent film RunawayDaughters, based on a new screenplay byCharlie Haas (Gremlins 2, Matinee). The new plot has three girls faking their ownkidnapping to track down an errant boy who has impregnated one of them. JulieBowen leads the cast as a bright bad girl with an infectious sparkle in hereye; she has the hots for Paul Rudd, slightly miscast as a motorcycle man.Dante's cartoonish visual style, with its campfire-flashlight lighting scheme,is evident throughout, as well as his trademark in-jokes and references(including a clip from I Was a Teenage Werewolf). But Dante's sense of plucky satire doesn't quiteapply to most of this story; he's too removed from the melodrama this genrerequires. (Look at Nicholas Ray's Rebel Without a Cause for the supreme example.) Many familiar faces turnup in small roles and cameos, including Dick Miller, Roger Corman, John Astinand Cathy Moriarity. DVD Details: This DVD, grossly overpriced at $30, contains the full-screen movie with optional subtitles and scene selections but no other extras. Miramax/Dimension has released Runaway Daughters in conjunction with another of the Rebel Highway films, Jonathan Kaplan's Reform School Girl.
