Bad Fathers
By Jeffrey M. Anderson This movie has everything going for it, and yet just doesn't work. David Mamet wrote the screenplay (based on an old Humphrey Bogart film) and Neil Jordan directs with an eye for frozen, jagged landscapes. Robert De Niro and Sean Penn play escaped convicts who are mistaken for clergymen and Demi Moore plays the love interest. The actors are game, but the basic situation is just ridiculous and none of the filmmakers seem to have the comedic touch to make it work. Penn, with his perpetually perplexed expression, gets in some good moments, though. Paramount's DVD has a nice transfer, but no extras.
