Bringing Up Madonna

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Director James Foley turned in great work on shadowy dramas such as After Dark, My Sweet (1990) and Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), but when it came to directing Madonna in a screwball comedy, Who's That Girl? (1987), he was lost. A quasi-remake of Howard Hawks' Bringing Up Baby, the story has meek, fastidious Louden Trott (Griffin Dunne) asked to transport Nikki Finn (Madonna) from prison to the bus station. On the same trip, he must pick up a cougar. The film isn't classically bad by any means, but it's utterly predictable and Madonna tries (and fails) to be cute with a high-pitched delivery and occasional squeaky giggles.
