Billy's Boys

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

A fun Western for Gen X, Christopher Cain's Young Guns stars Emilio Estevez as a sympathetic Billy the Kid, who teams up with a band of other young gunslingers (Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Lou Diamond Phillips, Dermot Mulroney and Casey Siemaszko) to avenge the murder of the only man who was ever nice to him (Terence Stamp). Jack Palance plays the bad guy. A sequel followed in 1990. Lionsgate released a very nice two-disc set in 2023, containing a 4K disc, a Blu-ray, and a digital copy. There's a new Dolby Atmos audio track that makes the gunshots really roar. Bonuses include a new commentary track by actors Phillips, Mulroney, and Siemaszko (they talk about how convenient it was to cover up their zits with mud and blood), a new making-of featurette (35 minutes), a documentary on the real Billy the Kid (32 minutes, featured on the original DVD release), and trailers. Recommended.
