The Blob (1988)

Goo Boo

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Frank Darabont, who would go on to direct The Shawshank Redemption, co-wrote this remake of the 1958 monster movie The Blob, along with writer/director Chuck Russell (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Mask). Thanks to some imaginatively gory practical FX and appealing turns by cute Shawnee Smith and mop-headed Kevin Dillon (they're the intrepid teens who pursue the threat), it's not too bad. This one has a fresh angle, positing that the icky creature is not from outer space, but is rather the product of man's hubris.
