That's All Right
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Surprisingly, John Carpenter made this 3-hour TV movie in-between Halloween and The Fog. It sadly lacks authentic Memphis locations, and it omits some of the more tragic elements of Elvis Presley's life, but its focus on the King's complex relationships with his entourage and his loved ones is most interesting. Best of all, Kurt Russell is electrifying in the title role; it was the beginning of a long friendship and working relationship for the actor and director. In an inspired bit of casting, Shelley Winters plays Elvis's beloved mama. Shout! Factory released it on Blu-ray, but sadly, there's no option to watch it in its original TV broadcast ratio of 1:1.33; it has been enhanced for widescreen TVs.
