Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)

2 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Slight-Seeing

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

The same year that John Carpenter's Halloween was released, he also had a screenwriting credit on this, his first big studio film. Laura Mars (Faye Dunaway) is a fashion photographer whose photos involve scenes of violence and spark controversy. One day she begins seeing visions of actual violent acts, as if she were inside someone else's eyes. Soon, she realizes that this mysterious killer is actually after her. Tommy Lee Jones plays a police lieutenant who comes to her aid and falls in love with her, and Brad Dourif is great as Laura's driver. The movie is glossy and fussy, and never really uses the "seeing-through-another's-eyes" idea in any visual, cinematic way. The director was Irvin Kershner, who went on to make The Empire Strikes Back, Never Say Never Again, and Robocop 2. Kino Lorber released it on a 2022 Blu-ray, including an archival commentary track by Kershner (who died in 2010), a vintage featurette, an image gallery, and a selection of trailers.
