Yabba-Dabba-Boo By Jeffrey M. Anderson Just in time for Halloween 2012, Warner Archive has released a new DVD featuring "The Flintstones Meet Rockula and Frankenstone," which originally aired October 30, 1979. It has some interesting, expressive backgrounds and it's an enjoyably lightweight holiday special, but by Flintstones standards, it's only average. This kind of humor has aged badly, with loudmouth husbands and perpetually amused/annoyed wives. The horror aspect is pretty forced: "Rockula" has resurrected the "Frankenstone" monster in order to scare away werewolves, though the story never follows up on this vague idea. Instead, Rockula decides that Wilma is the resurrection of his beloved and tries to kill Fred so that she will be single. The other special on this disc is "Flintstones Little Big League," in which Fred and Barney find themselves coaching opposing baseball teams, with Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm as the star players on each time. "Pamela Anderson" is credited with the voice of Pebbles, which raises all kinds of fascinating images, but -- sorry to disappoint -- it's not the Pamela Anderson you're thinking of. |
