Wham! Bam! Here Comes Pam!
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
In 2015, Olive Films released two classic Pam Grier movies (Coffy and Foxy Brown) on Blu-ray, along with this more toned-down, more polished effort. Friday Foster was based on a groundbreaking newspaper comic strip about a black female fashion photographer. In this, Friday (Grier) is a photographer for a magazine. As the movie opens, she photographs an assassination attempt and becomes a target. She teams up with a private detective (Yaphet Kotto) to find out what's going on.
With a new director, Arthur Marks (Detroit 9000, Bucktown), Friday Foster has a more positive vibe than the earlier Grier movies; the worst the heroine does is steal a milk truck to chase some bad guys. Grier's character is a former fashion model; she's more beautiful here than she is badass. The cast consists of an amazing list of past and future black stars (as well as Jim Backus). The soundtrack is by Luchi De Jesus.
