Poker Face: Season One (2023)
Bulls**t Detector
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Somewhere during or around writing the complex and hilarious screenplays for
Knives Out
and
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
, Rian Johnson found the time and the creative brainpower to come up with this equally complex and hilarious TV series. (He wrote episodes 1 and 10, the wraparounds, and directed episodes 1, 2, and 9.)
Poker Face
stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, who is not exactly a private eye, but rather a cocktail waitress at a casino with the amazing ability to tell when someone is lying. She solves a murder, but then the owner of the casino (Adrien Brody) threatens her life and she goes on the run. Every episode she stops in a different place either to get her car fixed or pick up some temporary work to raise some cash. And each time there's another murder for her to solve. Episode 10 brings her full circle, having to face the music, and revealing more untold truths. It sounds silly, but the quality of the writing is so strong, and Lyonne is so good as Charlie — with her raspy, Noo Yawk accent and wry delivery — that it's a slam-bang winner every episode. The impressive guest-star roster doesn't hurt either. I received the 3-disc DVD set for review, which contains no extras. Nevertheless, it's Recommended to anyone who doesn't subscribe to Peacock, or anyone who loves physical media.
