Val Kilmer is at his funniest and most charming in this hilarious film about a group of college geniuses who work to develop a secret weapon. Since our heroes tangle with stuck-up preppies and evil professor (William Atherton), it's meant to be another wild and anarchic Animal House-type movie with the misfits and outcasts against the establishment, but the characters' hyper-intelligence and Kilmer's ultra-cool contribute to an atmosphere of positivity and inclusion. The movie celebrates brains and not stupidity. Kilmer steals the show with his ultimate do-not-give-a-rip confidence, walking around in bunny slippers or what have you. He's the guy every nerd boy wishes he could be, and every nerd girl wishes she could be with. Some of the '80s stuff has not aged well (particularly the main character Mitch's hair), but the attitudes are timeless.
