Mind's Spy

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

"I am not a spy! I just read books!" protests Joe Turner, code named "Condor" (Robert Redford). He works for the CIA scanning mysteries, looking for interesting plots and tricks. But when his entire office of book-readers is suddenly murdered, he is forced to put all that book knowledge into practical action. That's the genius behind this still-relevant political thriller, directed by Sydney Pollack (his fourth of seven movies with Redford). Watching Condor erratically and imaginatively using his wits to work his way through his situation is a sheer pleasure, and the way he baffles his methodical superiors is even more satisfying. Faye Dunaway is at her loveliest as one of his more interesting solutions. Swedish actor Max von Sydow plays a mysterious, threatening killer, Cliff Robertson is Condor's CIA contact, and John Houseman has a few memorable lines as one of the higher powers.
