Been Caught Cheating
By Jeffrey M. Anderson In yet another irreverent teen comedy, three clever cheaters are nearly through scheming their way through college until one of them gets caught by nerdy Ethan (Jason Schwartzman, from Rushmore). Ethan blackmails them into using their superior social skills to win the beautiful Angela (James King) for his girlfriend. Of course, the suave Dave (Devon Sawa) falls in love with Angela instead. The plot is purely worn-out teen fare, but Schwartzman brings Slackers to life with his seriously deranged Ethan, a half-brother to Jim Carrey's The Cable Guy. Ethan keeps an Angela hair-doll and a shrine to his beloved future girlfriend, but his body language and awkward delivery suggest a lifetime of social deprivation suddenly bursting to get out all at once. Because of Ethan (or maybe in spite of him) I found myself laughing a lot.
