You Can Count on Me (2000)
Where It 'Counts'
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Writer Kenneth Lonergan (Analyze This) makes his directorial debut with this quiet, amazingly sharp character study of a brother and sister (whose parents died in a car crash) reuniting and clashing over their differences. Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo play the siblings with relish that only comes from a well-written role. The characterizations and storytelling is so rich it puts most movies to shame. Matthew Broderick appears in a funny supporting role as Linney's boss. Linney earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, as did Lonergan for Best Screenplay.
