Blown Out of the Water

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

This Disney animated adventure was a critical and box-office disappointment in the summer of 2001, with blame placed on the fact that it was not computer-animated, on its lack of musical numbers, and other factors. But in the years since, it has become one of the few bona-fide Disney cult classics, thanks in part to its art design, which was inspired by comic book genius and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, as well as a screenplay contribution by Joss Whedon, and a fine, rousing score by James Newton Howard. Its widescreen action make it one of the flat-out best-looking and most exciting Disney movies since the golden age. Michael J. Fox provides the voice of Milo, a young adventurer in 1916 who joins an expedition to find the lost city of Atlantis. Once there, he meets the beautiful Kida (voiced by Cree Summer) and must help save her civilization, as well as stopping the opportunistic Rourke (voiced by James Garner) from selling its secrets.
