Spacing Out
By Jeffrey M. Anderson The documentary Starwoids follows the progress of several L.A. Star Wars fans who waited in line for weeks and weeks for the chance to see Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace in May of 1999. One fan named Daniel did it with his friends in front of one theater, and an official organization from the website countingdown.com did it in front of another. Though the film tries to paint an honest picture of these people, any sane viewer can't help but view them with a certain pity. To go one further, the film interviews Hal Wamsley, the actor who played "the Jawa who shot R2-D2" in the original Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Wamsley has spent the intervening 25 years living off of this small glory and has even recorded a CD of "Jawa music." Other collectors and fanatics are interviewed, and, no matter how much you like Star Wars, the film will leave you feeling relatively healthy and normal.
