Wadd Fellows
By Jeffrey M. Anderson NYU Wunderkind James Cox (Highway) directs and co-writes this story of the brutal 1981 quadruple murder associated with porn star John Holmes. Cox gives us a kind of Rashomon, with Holmes (Val Kilmer) and David Lind (Dylan McDermott) providing different versions of the story, but between Boogie Nights -- which was loosely based on Holmes' life -- and the documentary Wadd: The Life and Times of John C. Holmes we've frankly heard it all before. Not to mention that Cox appropriates drug-frenzied images and editing styles from GoodFellas, Requiem for a Dream, Spun and tons of other films. Nevertheless, the huge cast, which also includes Lisa Kudrow, Kate Bosworth, Josh Lucas, Tim Blake Nelson, Eric Bogosian and a nearly unrecognizable Christina Applegate, bring to the table the essence of a professional production.
