Theatrics
By Jeffrey M. Anderson In 2002, "independent cinema guru" John Pierson, his wife and two teenaged kids settled in Fiji for a year. In their final month, director Steve James (Hoop Dreams, Stevie) joined the family with a camera. It's a lot of fun to watch the Piersons running a dilapidated theater and showing X2: X-Men United and Jackass to the natives. But with no purpose or drive, the film merely collects a batch of dramatically explosive footage, such as a robbery, fights within the family and Pierson contracting a tropical disease. The pointless end result isn't that different from any disposable reality TV program. Kevin Smith co-produced.
