Beauty and the Beasties
By Jeffrey M. Anderson The Beastie Boys invite everyone to experience a 2004 Madison Square Garden concert in Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That!. Opening this week at the Bridge (3010 Geary Blvd., SF), this so-called "official bootleg" movie broke new ground by handing out 50 digital video cameras to audience members; the only rule was that everyone keep shooting, no matter what. We get shaky footage from the balcony all the way up to the front of the stage, from every conceivable angle. Additionally, we get shots of the restroom and the hot dog stand. It starts out on the nausea-inducing side, but it quickly settles into one of the most vivid concert experiences ever filmed. The enthusiastic Beasties keep the show moving at breakneck pace, throwing in silly costumes and lots of surprises, but anyone who's not already a fan will probably not be converted.
