Main Corpse
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Writer/director Karen Moncrieff (Blue Car) crafts her new movie in five different sections, one involving the dead girl of the title, one involving the woman who finds her, and three other segments with women both directly and indirectly affected by the death. Moncrieff unfurls her tales with the poetic intensity of short stories, concentrating more on moods and moments than plot and twists. In that, the performances are exemplary, from the pros (Toni Collette, Marcia Gay Harden, Mary Steenburgen), to up-and-comers (Brittany Murphy, Rose Byrne, Kerry Washington). Murphy is especially impressive as the victim, trying to come up with a ride to visit her daughter on her birthday. The connective tissue between the stories can sometimes seem gimmicky, such as the dramatic re-appearance of the killer. Still, The Dead Girl is a very impressive, passionate achievement worth seeking out.
