'Dolls' of the Wild

A follow-up to his L'Auberge espagnole (2003), Cedric Klapisch's Russian Dolls focuses on a Parisian freelance writer, Xavier (Romain Duris), who -- in lieu of writing his great novel -- works as a ghostwriter and on romance screenplays. In the meanwhile, he searches for his own true love in a variety of writing partners, friends and ex-girlfriends.
Klapisch (When the Cat's Away) has a light, springy touch and a real adoration for his characters and their Paris/London locations, and even at a lengthy 126 minutes, the film never drags. A delightful movie, it's like a soothing European vacation for the fog-bound. Kelly Reilly and Audrey Tautou co-star. IFC's 2006 DVD comes with a making-of featurette.
