Abbie's Road
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Talented documentary filmmaker Brett Morgen (On the Ropes, The Kid Stays in the Picture) delivers this portrait of the radical hippie groups that protested the Vietnam War by non-violently disrupting the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Morgen employs stock film clips, pop songs (ranging from The MC5 to Eminem) and, refreshingly, no talking heads. Best of all, the film uses voiceover actors and Waking Life-style animation to re-create the infamous trial with amazing effectiveness and intimacy. Abbie Hoffman (voiced by Hank Azaria) emerges as the movie's most charismatic hero, fearless and funny, and especially touching in his nightly phone calls to a radio station during the trial. The late Roy Scheider voices the twisted Judge Hoffman, and Jeffrey Wright provides the passionate voice of Bobby Seale. DVD Details: The main extra on Paramount's DVD is contest winner Gine Tealroli's "video remix," which runs about 2 minutes. Besides that, there are previews and optional English subtitles. History buffs and politics nerds shouldn't miss this!
