Hubley's Scope
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Animator Faith Hubley won a San Francisco International Film Festival award (Persistence of Vision in 2000), and now her daughter Emily makes her festival debut with The Toe Tactic, a quirky, arty kind of romantic comedy with animated interludes. It's passably cute, and intriguingly disconnected, but to put it plainly, I liked this idea better when it was called Me and You and Everyone We Know. The title is a play on "tic tac toe." The new DVD from Kino comes with two deleted scenes and three of Hubley's animated short films, Pigeon Within (2000), Set Set Spike (2003) and Octave (2006). There are also two "animatics," and a stills gallery. All in all, it's a nice DVD for fans of unusual animation and quirky cinema.
