It's a lot of fun to watch a bunch of comedy greats assemble to write and publish the National Lampoon magazine, which ran from 1970 to 1998. Several of them went on to "Saturday Night Live," but all of them were crazy. This documentary presents a straight-ahead history of the magazine, discussing growing pains, financial troubles, the coming and going of talent, and then the branching off into movies. Some of the jokes may be dated, but the infamous "If You Don’t Buy This Magazine, We'll Kill This Dog" cover stills shows just how irreverent they were. The doc is a bit more loony than the recent SNL film, but it's still just a bit too tame — i.e. lots of talking heads — to truly represent its subject.
