Barry (2016)

3 Stars (out of 4)

Barack and Forth

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

A small-scale drama that imagines what future President Barack Obama's formative years might have been like, Barry is wonderfully natural and exploratory, striking a nice balance between how "Barry" (Devon Terrell) envisioned himself at age 20, and how his values would change and adapt throughout his later years. Anya Taylor-Joy is a little underused as Charlotte, Barry's college girlfriend (a composite of more than one), but she still projects her singular star power and makes the role her own. Southside With You, released the same year, is also a fictional account of Obama's past.
