Madeline's Madeline (2018)
Spinner Theater
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Josephine Decker's Madeline's Madeline is done in a kind of hallucinatory fashion, with wandering shots and editing that jumps in and out of scenes that are either dreams or fantasies or illusions. The young star, Helena Howard, clearly has something, and hopefully she can get more strong roles in the future. She's Madeline, a troubled teen girl who is part of an after-school acting class. Her teacher (Molly Parker) encourages her to dig deeper in her exercises, mainly pretending to be animals. Her mother (Miranda July) is exasperated at her strange behavior. Things just seem to meander through a series of actors doing acting exercises until we're not sure whether or not Madeline is insane. Many have admired it, but I'm afraid it just didn't really work for me.
