Over the Moon
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Until now, the documentary For All Mankind (1989) looked to be the definitive word on the 1969 moon landing, but this one easily tops it. Prepared for the fiftieth anniversary, Apollo 11 consists of 93 minutes of astounding color footage, some of it shot in 70mm, and put together by filmmaker Todd Douglas Miller. It uses no new narration, commentary, or music. It focuses on all the preparations leading up to the mission, the general feeling in the air among regular folks, and the mission itself, up to, including, and beyond, "that's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins (whose name I will never forget again) are featured. It was released in some IMAX theaters.
