Jessica Kingdon's artful documentary Ascension foregoes narration and relies on a rich visual tapestry as it explores the economy and work environment in China. It offers little snippets of very different facets, such as factory workers, people trying to find work, each vying to find the "Chinese Dream." But the film brutally subverts this concept with its carefully-chosen imagery, from the strange things that are manufactured, to the suggestions that people here are nothing more than cogs in a giant, ever-escalating machine.
