Vampire Fronters
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
A solid entry into the "Welcome to the Blumhouse" collection, Maritte Lee Go's Black as Night offers another, surprisingly fresh take on the old vampire genre. Set in a struggling area of New Orleans, it begins as besties Shawna (Asjha Cooper) and Pedro (Fabrizio Guido) settle in for another boring summer. One night, Shawna witnesses, and tries to intervene in, an actual vampire attack. Then her drug-addicted mother, who lives in a brutal housing project, is turned, and the friends deduce that the vampires are targeting the homeless and the disenfranchised. They team up with Shawna's handsome crush Chris (Mason Beauchamp) and the nerdy Granya (Abbie Gayle), who loves vampire novels and provides the crew with some helpful intel. The movie is often familiar, and could have quickened its pace a tad, but the way it ties in fictional monsters with the real-life terrors is admirable. The great character actor Keith David adds some spice as well.
