Broken Parts

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Causeway is one of those indie features that feels like it might have come from some "indie feature" algorithm, piecing together quirky, yet touching elements and opposing characters who, for some reason, find themselves spending time together. In this case, Lynsey (Jennifer Lawrence) has just returned from Afghanistan, where she worked with the Army Corps of Engineers, with a severe brain injury. She must undergo therapy to learn how to do basic tasks again, and she does well, but she's impatient to return, due in part with a tempestuous relationship with her mother (Linda Emond). One day her truck breaks down and she takes it to mechanic James (Brian Tyree Henry). They have nothing in common except being broken, and despite their emotional armor, they begin hanging out. And as preposterous as it sounds, Lawrence and Henry use some mighty acting muscle to make this work. Their scenes together flow beautifully and have a gentle, natural feel, and before long we're no longer questioning the mechanics of this screenplay, but rather invested in the lives of two characters that we've grown to care about.
