This low-rent horror movie doesn't really offer anything new, and its plot sounds similar to a dozen other tech-related chillers, but its quiet, menacing atmosphere is enough to keep the attention and make it worth a late-night look. College-age Kayla (Iola Evans) is stuck with a night job as a cleaner, while caring for her drug-addicted mother, and dodging a sleazy, exploitive landlord. She brings old-time tech to her computer-nerd friend, Isaac (Asa Butterfield), and unfortunately, the latest delivery includes a 1980s retro video game called "CURS>R." And, worse, the game demands that the player "choose or die," and the choice generally results in someone else dying. It seems to tap into Kayla's deepest fears, and she must stay on her toes to survive. Choose or Die isn't afraid to get pessimistic, asking questions about the prices we might pay to survive. The cackling voice of Robert Englund completes the "retro" vibe.
