Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Suburban Sprawl
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Olivia Wilde's follow-up to her excellent Booksmart is a good-looking movie, and it has its moments, but overall, I felt like the "1950s-type-suburbia-are-hiding-something-sinister" theme was just too shopworn. Plus it's way too long for how lightweight it is. A more serious, less-thrillery movie like Todd Haynes's Far from Heaven did the same thing, far better. Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack (Harry Styles) are our main couple, enjoying parties with their like-minded neighbors, and then, in the morning, the women stand in their driveways and watch the men drive to work in some mysterious job. Alice first begins to think that something's amiss when she sees an airplane crash and heads out where she's not supposed to be to find it. Pugh is great as always, and Chris Pine makes a fine villain, but I don't get the hype over Styles. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released a fine Blu-ray with a clean, sharp transfer and a Dolby Atmos audio mix. It includes a DVD and a bonus digital copy. Bonuses include an 18-minute behind-the-scenes featurette and a short deleted scene, "Alice's Nightmare."
