Eleventh Deadly Pin
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Clive Barker's original 1987 Hellraiser was a truly amazing, twisted, metaphysical exploration of human sensation, and the intersection of pain and pleasure. The new reboot, which is also the 11th film in the franchise, is more like a Scooby-Doo episode, with a bunch of teens in a van trying to solve a crime. The puzzle box is now simply an instrument of power and evil, with no mystery or nuance, and there's even a notebook that explains all the rules. The story has Riley (Odessa A'zion, great, also in the current The Inhabitant) and her boyfriend Trevor (Drew Starkey) robbing an abandoned building and unexpectedly finding the box. After playing with it, Riley's brother (Brandon Flynn) vanishes. They discover a connection to the wealthy Roland Voight (Goran Višnjić), who has also vanished. And it's a race against time to beat the box and the Cenobites before everyone disappears. The movie is notable for replacing its iconic "Pinhead" character with a woman (Jamie Clayton), but she gets precious little to do. Director David Bruckner (The Ritual, The Night House) crafts a good-looking, competent film, better than at least eight of the other Hellraiser movies, but disappointingly conventional.
