Ex Objects

The romantic comedy I Want You Back is based on what sounds like a silly rom-com concept, and one that was already pretty well used in Addicted to Love. Two couples break up, one person from each ex-couple takes a new partner, and the two dumpees meet and plan on how to sabotage the two new relationships. As the main characters, Jenny Slate and Charlie Day both balance a pretty good mix of zany and grounded, and they effectively drive the story. Moreover, the writing — by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (Love, Simon) — is just a little bit smarter than anyone could have expected, with the selection of supporting characters emerging as more than just cogs in a rom-com machine. Additionally, nothing quite goes as you would expect it to; there are no easy answers here, and there are messy consequences.
