Vise Storm

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

We never thought we'd see Allison Janney as an action hero, but here she is, as the title character in Anna Foerster's Lou, outwitting the bad guys and trying to save the day. It's 1986 on a small island in the Pacific Northwest. Janney's Lou lives there quietly with her dog Jax, and rents a house to struggling single mom Hannah Dawson (Jurnee Smollett), whose husband (Logan Marshall-Green) is in prison. A huge storm is brewing and residents prepare to lock up for the night. The husband suddenly appears and kidnaps Hannah's daughter, Vee (Ridley Asha Bateman). Lou springs into action, heading out into the storm, with Hannah tagging along, tracking the kidnapper through the woods, hoping to catch him before he leaves the island. It's very simply a sturdy, exciting little film, refreshingly female-centric and nicely atmospheric. Janney's expert work at the center is, of course, a huge reason for the film's success; she carries the weight of many secrets and many hidden skills under her stoic facade.
