3 Stars (out of 4)

Hacker Jacks

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

It's not always easy to know what's going on in this experimental, quasi-science-fiction, Afrofuturist musical, but it's quite often mesmerizing anyway. Matalusa (Kaya Free) works as a miner, digging for coltan, which is used to make cell phones. When his brother is brutally killed, he escapes. He meets the intersex Neptune (Cheryl Isheja and Elvis Ngabo) and they wind up at a remote hacker encampment, where anarchist plans are discussed, and where some strange force powers their own, independent energy grid. The co-directors — Rwandan filmmaker Anisia Uzeyman and American musician, writer, and artist Saul Williams — offer many bold, vivid images, tangles of colors and bizarre, entrancing costumes and hairstyles (frequently adorned with discarded technologies). The songs, ranging in various styles, are all interesting. Kino Lorber released Neptune Frost on Blu-ray in the summer of 2022, including a director commentary track (in English), plus deleted scenes and trailers.
