Triangle of Sadness (2022)

Ship Dreck

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Ruben Östlund's Triangle of Sadness won the 2022 Palme d'Or and received much acclaim, but I found it to be far too obvious and much too long; it's nowhere near as searing and subtle as Östlund's Force Majeure, which had an emotional sting. This one follows a vapid couple, a male model and an "influencer," as they take a cruise for the ultra-rich. One long sequence involves a storm with most of the guests becoming violently seasick. After a shipwreck, a certain number of passengers and crew wind up on an island, where the tables are "ironically" turned. During the first half, Östlund employs some neatly effective devices to make things more tense or off-balance, but by the second half, the film abandons any nuance. Woody Harrelson co-stars as the cruise ship Captain.
