Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)
Gospel Accordion to Al
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Rather than spoofing a new song, "Weird Al" Yankovic spoofs an entire movie genre, and the results are fantastic. With Weird, he drags out every stale chestnut ever used in any rise-to-fame rock-star biopic and twists them around for maximum comic effect. Those little "moments of discovery" when a song title or idea comes to a performer as if it were a gift from the heavens are now moments in which young Al (Daniel Radcliffe) completely, hilariously misses the opportunity. The rest of Weird is basically a tall tale, full of gleefully bold and bald-faced lies, including an affair with Madonna (Evan Rachel Wood, amazing) and a deadly face-off with Pablo Escobar (Arturo Castro). It's spry and unpredictable and constantly silly, all the way up to and including a new end-credits song (which is eligible for Oscar consideration!). Many familiar faces appear in small roles, but Julianne Nicholson and Toby Huss play Al's parents, Rainn Wilson is Dr. Demento, Diedrich Bader narrates, and Yankovic himself plays a slimy record executive.
