Heavenly Dragon
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Donnie Yen directed and stars in this wuxia based on the classic novel Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, and while Yen's martial arts sequences are spectacular, he also relies on a prior knowledge of the source material. The result is frequently confusing, and the 130-minute running time doesn't help, but the moments of clarity that do emerge, and the glorious action, make it worth a look, especially for fans of Yen. He plays Qiao Feng, an orphan who is raised among the Song clan and becomes the leader of the Beggars' Sect, fighting and winning many battles. When his true identity is discovered (he was born in an enemy clan), he is framed for several murders and exiled. He meets Azhu (Chen Yuqi), who, during a fight, sustains lethal damage. Qiao Feng takes her back to the Beggars for healing, but they refuse, leading to a massive battle. There's more, but to be honest, I lost the thread. Well Go USA released it on Blu-ray, with excellent picture and sound, along with a short six-minute behind-the-scenes featurette and a trailer.
