Hate Bait

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Written and directed by Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping, Femme is a powerful and unexpected portrait of a hate crime and vengeance for said crime, though it's hardly that simple. Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) is a drag performer who notices a man in a hoodie checking him out. Later the man, joined by a crew, jumps Jules and viciously beats him. After a couple of months, Jules has stopped performing and has retreated from life. He spots his attacker, Preston (George MacKay), in a sauna, and they begin a sexual relationship. Jules gets the idea to film them having sex and then destroy Preston's reputation by posting it online, but things grow more complex. This is a steely look at hate (both bigotry and self-loathing) and the choice between violence and empathy. The film has a grimy, chilly, late-night feel — and a general fearlessness, especially toward sex — that enhances its themes.
