Traveling Companion
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Richard Linklater is the most individual and original filmmaker on the scene right now, (besides Quentin Tarantino). His films have such a vital simplicity, but a with a complex personality. like Linklater's previous two films Slacker and Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise can be summed up simply: "American boy and French girl meet in Vienna and have only one night to spend together." But the film is much more than just that. The couple have the perfect night together, which is what the audience wants, but at the same time, they are nervous, they are worried about saying the wrong thing. Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke are attractive movie stars, but they look rumpled and normal here, slightly travel-weary. Every element in the movie has this duality. Everything that happens feels like it really could happen; it's not just movie magic. This is a marvellous film, one of the year's best.
