Gangster Politics
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Warren Beatty produces, directs, co-writes, and stars in this wild, smart, and funny political comedy. Bulworth is about a suicidal Senator, J. Bulworth, who puts out a contract on himself. In the meantime, he begins to tell voters the way it really is, discovers how freeing that is, and falls in love with Halle Berry. He continues to try and capture this high again and again, while attempting to dodge the hitmen who are now after him. Bulworth makes you laugh and makes you enraged, in a good way. It feels good to have someone telling the truth for once. The plot gets a little jerky here and there, but Beatty and his cinematographer, three-time Oscar winner Vittorio Storaro pull it all together. Beatty is a very shielded actor, but he shrewdly finds ways to work within his limitations, and Bulworth is a tour-de-force for him. An uncommonly intelligent summer film. Ennio Morricone provided the score.
