By Jeffrey M. Anderson An intriguing, smart, and witty movie from the Netherlands, Alex van Warmerdam's The Dress follows in the footsteps of such movies as Julien Duvivier's Tales of Manhattan (1942), Luis Bunuel's The Phantom of Liberty (1974), and Richard Linklater's Slacker (1991). The movie starts as a dressmaker's girlfriend leaves him, and he creates a pattern for a new dress. We follow the dress itself from person to person, witnessing the strange pathos, desire, and cruelty, it seems to create. The Dress plays for a week at the Roxie, starting Nov. 27. DVD Details: Image Entertainment's 2005 DVD comes with an 8-minute interivew with the director (in English) and trailers for three of his films, including The Dress, Little Tony and Grimm.
